How Much Water Should You Drink?

According to Dr Jaroslav Boublik, when we are born our bodies are up to 94% water, however as we age, the amount of water in the body decreases to around 65% for adults and as low as 49% for the elderly.

Naturally humans feel thirsty when the amount of water in the body drops, however with years of “training” we may learn to ignore this thirst reflex. How many times have you ignored your thirst reflex because you were busy, in a meeting, or going out or didn’t want to have to go to the toilet? Sometimes you may have attempted to “quench” your thirst by drinking coffee, tea, juice or soft drink. Unfortunately, this would not work because your body treats juice, soft drinks and milk as food and cannot use the “water” component of the drink. Black (or green) tea and coffee are even worse because they act as diuretics causing you to pee out more water than you drink.

The solution, according to Dr Boublik, is to ensure that you drink at least 1.2 – 1.7 litres of water per day. If you are athletic or sweat a lot, you may even need 2 – 10 times as much water, just to keep your body hydrated.

The best form of water is natural spring water that is full of dissolved minerals and is slightly carbonated. Unfortunately as most of us do not live close to an uncontaminated spring, we must make do with bottled spring water or lightly carbonated water. If you use tap water you should invest in a good quality water filter to remove the chemical impurities from the water and replace them with healthy minerals like nature intended.

According to kinesiology theory, your body can still be dehydrated even if you drink enough water. This is because your body may be blocked from utilising this water properly. If you drink and then find that you immediately must go to the toilet or you never feel thirsty, the chances are that you have a block to utilising water.<.p> The good news is that once this block is cleared, your body will be able to utilise water properly and return to optimal health. Dr Batmanghelidj in his book, Your Body’s Many Cries for Water explains how many common diseases including high blood pressure, high cholesterol, asthma, allergies and arthritis have been cured just by simply ensuring that you drink enough good quality water.
