Research shows spirulina really is a wonder food
|
Even as a health professional, I find it very difficult to distinguish between advertising hype and fact for certain health products. Nearly every product is wholistic, conquers free radicals and has numerous, some may say even contradictory uses. Scientific evidence is hard to come by because, let’s face it, there is not a lot of money in plant medicine because you can’t patent them.
When one of my clients told me about some of the benefits her husband experienced from taking spirulina I believed it, but could not understand how. Spirulina was considered to be a wonder food but primarily as a nutritional supplement. It contains many amino acids, trace elements and minerals which help one’s overall wellbeing but nothing specific.

Recent evidence has proven that this is not the case. Indian university research has found that spirulina enhances immunity by increasing the activity of macrophages (cells that destroy bacteria and other pathogens), stimulating the production of antibodies and increasing the number of natural killer cells (which seek out and destroy cancer and other foreign organisms). This research has also found spirulina helps regulate blood sugar levels and may be of benefit in diabetes management.
Even more amazing is that spirulina is one of the food substances (natural or chemical) that is effective against enveloped viruses including herpes, the flu and possibility HIV. It may also be effective as a cancer treatment agent as it is a strong anti-oxidant that protects tissues especially the liver, kidneys and testes.
